What hiking routes are available in Lachtal?

The well-marked hiking trails lead through the mountainous landscape at various difficulty levels, so both beginners and experienced hikers can find suitable routes. For families, playgrounds, easy walking paths, and adventure parks provide entertainment, while more active visitors can try mountain biking or even via ferrata routes.

One of the special features of the area is its crystal-clear mountain lakes, which are not only beautiful but also suitable for a refreshing swim on warmer days.

1. Aqualux Thermal Spa Experience

Located in Fohnsdorf near Lachtal, the AQUALUX thermal spa welcomes visitors looking for relaxation and swimming even in summer. Outdoor pools, water slides, an indoor children’s pool, sunbathing lawns, and a restaurant pavilion make it an ideal place for relaxation and recharge.

2. Wildes Lachtal Adventure Trail

This easy hiking trail in Lachtal is especially recommended for families with children. It combines nature with play, discovery, and active recreation. The recently opened circular trail features 16 interactive stations, including wooden animal figures, climbing elements, and interactive puzzles.

The goal of the adventure trail is not only physical activity but also playful learning: children can discover the forest ecosystem and learn the basics of environmental awareness while playing.

The Wildes Lachtal trail can be easily accessed via the Schönberg 6-seater chairlift and is ideal for a full-day family excursion.

3. Günster Waterfall

Located near the town of Schröder, this is the largest waterfall in Styria, standing 65 meters high. The hike starts from the parking area and continues with a short walk to the Schröderbach stream, following its path through a rocky gorge all the way up to the top of the waterfall.

At the base of the waterfall, next to the mountain hut, there is also a small petting zoo that delights children.

4. Steinschloss

 

Not far from Lachtal, near Mariahof, this rocky castle is considered one of the most beautiful ruins not only in Styria but in Central Europe.

The oldest remains date back to around 1100, and it was ultimately destroyed by a fire in the 18th century. The fortress has been partially restored, and even in its ruined state it offers a stunning sight. From the walls of the castle, located on a 1200-meter-high rock, there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the Alpine mountains.

5. Nostalgic Steam Train Ride through the Murau Forest World

 

The train usually runs between Murau and Tamsweg, following the Mur River valley through forests, mountains, and alpine villages. The term “Murau Forest World” comes from this region, which is famous for its dense forests and wooden architecture.

From the Steirerbar and Murtalbar buffet cars— the latter originally serving as an imperial salon carriage—passengers can enjoy refreshments while taking in the passing scenery. The vintage carriages, rhythmic chugging, smell of steam, and closeness to nature offer a unique experience for anyone wishing to relive the romantic era of rail travel.

The train stops at several points along the way, allowing opportunities for hiking, photography, or even visiting a countryside restaurant.
