Until the late Middle Ages, Oberzeiring was very famous for its silver mines. Today the silver resource is exhausted but the mine is still in use as a tourist attraction.
It has healing qualities for bronchial ailments and this success has already been internationally recognized.
Visitors to the museum can explore a show mine, opened in 1958, and on the surface are displays of tools and means of lighting used in the mines, mineral specimens that were found there, and relics of the mint that produced coins in Oberzeiring between 1284 and 1365.
